The most fabulous thing about this mantra is that when you do it, when you really focus on the sound you are making and the sonic field you are creating with your sound something amazing happens. Your thoughts stop and, as you continue, your mind will eventually empty. It is a very fast way to achieve stillness and peacefulness … and even, if you persevere, a state of thoughtlessness.
So why not give it a go?
Wahe Guru
Pronounced: Whaa Hay Gu Roo.
Whaa – lnfinity
Hay – The presence of the finite in infinity
Gu – Darkness
Ru – Light
Sit with your spine straight and place your hands in your lap palms up, with the right hand resting in the left. It does not matter whether or not the thumbs touch.
Wahe also means wow or ecstasy, a beautiful exclamation of the sheer joy of existence.
Guru also means the force that brings you out of the darkness into the light. It transforms dark into light, and we could all use a bit of that at the moment.
Lastly, the word guru is a familiar one. It describes someone who is a master, a person who is wise and compassionate and spiritual, and the vibration created when you use the word awakens this in you because it is contained within the vibration of the word. And as you say it or chant it, the energy you create will connect you to the wise teacher inside you, which is, of course, massively beneficial to you. Some consider the guru to be the higher self or the soul, but it does not matter what definition you use – it is still the most fabulous part of you!!
And another way of looking at what the mantra means is to think of the words Wahe Guru as a way of expressing the wonderful feeling you have when you make a true and profound connection with your soul, your true essence, your authentic self. And as you chant them the vibration holds all this, making it easier to come into resonance with this wonderful part of you. Some people even say it will trigger your destiny!
The mantra will also:
- Give you the experience of infinity
- Connect you with the energy of the Divine – whatever you perceive it to be
- Allows you to see the Divine in everything on the earthplane
- Allow you to lose your sense of self and become one – it connects you to unity consciousness
- Allows you to express the indescribable experience of going from darkness to light or if you look at it another way – from ignorance to true understanding
You can repeat the mantra silently or chant it out loud, but your focus for the sound, the place where you want it to go when you make it, is between your eyebrows and the brow chakra. And you begin with three minutes and gradually increase to eleven minutes.
And, as if all of the above isn’t enough… the mantra can also be used to dissolve anger and alter your emotional state to a more positive one. When you chant it and your tongue hits your upper palate, it stimulates the meridian point connected to the thalamus, so it will calm you down.
If you are not comfortable making sound on your own and you want to chant with someone, I recommend a youtube version of the mantra by Mantra Girl (who is astonishing). The page reference is:

May the sound you make bless you!
